Hon. James C. Abbott died at his home after a short illness, in the evening of July ninth.
Mr. Abbott was born in Andover, Mass., June 30th, 1823. He was the third son of William and Rachael Cochrane Abbott, and a brother of the late George L. Abbott of Andover.
Mr. Abbott was graduated from Phillips Academy, was for two years a student at Dartmouth College, and then took a course in the Harvard law school. Mr. Abbott practiced law for over 50 years in Lowell. He was elected mayor in 1885 and as mayor showed much executive ability. He was President of the First National Hank until the consolidation with the Merchants' Railroad Bank. He was president of the Lowell Mutual Fire Insurance Company, also a director in the Merrimack Mutual Insurance of Andover. He was a member of Pilgrim Commandery. He had the confidence of his many clients and was highly esteemed by his fellow members of the bar.
December 16, 1863 he was married to Miss Lena Myer of Boston, who survives him with two daughters Katharine M. and Rachel W., and one son, James Marland Abbott, also four nieces, Mrs. Albert G. Martin and Mis. William Marland of Griffin, Ga., Mrs. James E. Sewall of Concord, N.H., and Ellen-J. Abbott of Andover.
Funeral services were held at his late home Monday last and were largely attended, and the beautiful flowers testified to the affection and esteem of his many friends and neighbors. Interment was in the Lowell Cemetery.
