Katherine Manning Hannon was born September 21, 1927 in Boston, Massachusetts, the daughter of Francis Joseph Hannon and his wife, Helen (Tobin) Hannon. She attended Newton County Day School of the Sacred Heart. She was known as KK to her family and friends.

A renowned beauty, she was married in 1956 to John Simms Kelly, better known as "Shipwreck Kelly," a professional football player who played halfback in the National Football League and became a player-coach and later a player/coach/owner with the Dodgers football club. After World War II Kelly pursued a career as an investment banker and real estate investor.

Her second husband, Peter Larkin, was a great-grandson of Captain Richard King, the founder of the King Ranch in Texas.

Following the death of her second husband, she was married in 1972 to James Overton Winston III, of Houston, Texas, who died in 1974.

She was married to her fourth husband, James Douglas Auchincloss, and they enjoyed twenty years of marriage before his death in 2000.

Known for her exquisite taste as well as her beauty and charm, she had a flare for interior decorating. Only a couple of years before her death, she renovated a house built in the style of a Norman chateau in Brookville, New York, allowing her to create her own unique interior utilizing the eighteenth century furniture and decorative arts she loved.

She was involved in many charities including the Brandywine Conservancy and the Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.

Catherine Manning (Hannon) Auchincloss died on March 8, 2017 at the age of 89 at her home in New York City surrounded by family and friends. Her obituary, published in The New York Times on March 10, 2017, states:

"She was fun and funny, adored dancing and catching a man's eye. As a hostess, she entertained with flair, loved intelligent conversation and sophisticated wit. KK lived in a world of rotary phones, tea at four and champagne swizzle sticks. She was interested in imagination and what sparked it, and credited her unique abilities to gifts from God. Always chic, KK dressed impeccably into her last days. She will be sorely missed by those who love her. As she often said when departing, "Bye for now. Keep in constant touch."
