NIMMO, Philip Ellis III - age 82, of Fenton, died February 22, 2020 at his winter residence in Ocala, Florida. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 AM Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 6481 Faussett Road, Howell with Rev. Fr. Gregg Pleiness celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Augustine Cemetery. Visitation will be held 3 PM - 8 PM Monday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 W. Silver Lake Rd., Fenton 48430 where a rosary will be prayed at 7 PM Monday evening. Visitation will be held from 10 AM - 11 AM Tuesday at the church. Philip was born September 19, 1937 in Passaic, NJ, the son of Philip E. and Leona (Dymond) Nimmo, Jr. He was a 1959 graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Philip married Loretta Salvucci in 1960. He retired from General Motors where he spent 20 years at the Milford Proving Grounds and 20 years at the GM Technical Center in Warren. Phil worked as a leading engineer at the Noise and Vibration Lab for several years. Personal computers arrived during his career at GM, Phil did advanced engineering with primitive computers before computer engineering became common practice. He was manager of the General Motors Instrumentation Department for several years and later was on special assignments to deal with major engineering issues for the corporation. He was the go-to-guy whenever there was a major engineering challenge. Among many accomplishments, Philip revolutionized brake testing in the automotive industry during the GM X-Car trials. After retirement he continued as a consultant to GM. Philip earned a Private Pilot license in 1965 after that he donated his time and his plane for Mercy Flights that transported sick patients at no cost throughout Michigan. He also flew Christmas gifts around Michigan for Child and Family Services. Philip was also an avid sailor and enjoyed sailing the Great Lakes. As a sailboat captain, Philip reluctantly went on his first Royal Caribbean Cruise in 1985 to celebrate 25 years of marriage with Loretta and last November he completed his 20th Cruise trip. Surviving are: wife of 59 plus years, Loretta; three children, Laura (Victor) Totis of Clarksburg, MD, Philip E. Nimmo IV of Bishop, CA, and Paul (Amy) Nimmo of Ocean Springs, MS; five grandchildren, Philip E. Nimmo V, Marina Nimmo, Eric Nimmo, Nicholas Nimmo and Nora Nimmo; several cousins also survive.
