Obituary

Francis Marion Adams was born September 10, 1849 in Highland county, Iowa and departed this life at his home at 1110 West Harvey, Wellington, Kansas, Saturday August 3, 1918 at the age of sixty nine years, ten months and twenty four days. His death came after an illness extending over a period of more than a year and during six months of that time he had been unable to even lift his hands. He was one of the most patient of men. During his long illness he was never heard to complain. He was fully prepared to meet death and tho wising to live he had no dread of the future. All was bright before him. Tho no hope was held out by his physicians for his recovery yet the end came suddenly and in a sense unexpectedly. He quietly, as it were, fell asleep. His wife was by his side constantly, never for the last six months being absent from his side for twenty minutes at a time. Mr. Adams came to Kansas in the Spring of 1880 and settled near Anson. For many years he followed the occupation of blacksmith living either in or near Anson all the time until about three years ago he moved with his family to Wellington. He was married December 26, 1872 to Achsie P. Green and to them were born three children, Samuel H., who died when but a child; Sadie E., who died October 6, 1902 and Jessie W. Adams the only surviving child. At the time of his marriage he became a member of the Friends church and remained an active member of the society till his death. He thought about the future and selected for his funeral the fourteenth chapter of St. John and asked that among the hymns used at the service should be "Nearer My God to Thee; Rock of Ages; Sometime We'll Better Understand" and "He Leadth Me." The funeral services were held at the Friends Church near Anson, known as Greencastle Church and interment at that place, Monday August 5th. The services were conducted by Rev. H.J. Cockerill, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church of Wellington. The sympathy of the many friends goes out to the bereaved widow and son and grandson Frances Meyer who has been a member of the household since he was two years of age. Mr. Adams leaves also four brothers to mourn his loss; Elias, living at Los Angels, Cal.; William of Wichita, Charles of Wellington and Absalom, from whom the relatives have not heard from for a number of years.
