"William I. Britton, a veteran of long-time naval service and of late an employee of the Hanley Company in Summerville, died at his home in Mayport R.D. at 8:45 p.m. Friday, April 9, at the age of 56 years.
Extremely active in veterans' organizations, Mr. Britton was a member of the American Legion Christian Post of Detroit, Mich., and was the first post commander of Vickers Post 249 in Detroit, Mich., which he organized.
He was also a member of the 40 and 8, No. 102, a branch of the American Legion Post in Detroit, and was of late commander of the American Legion post in Hazen.
Born at Eleanora, in Jefferson county, on March 10, 1897 [note: this is off by 1 year], he was the son of John and Minnie (Myers) Britton.
He formerly resided in Detroit, Mich., and in Jefferson county at Brookville and Summerville.
He was married to Lola Clarke, who survives him, as does a son and two daughters -- George Britton, of Boyne City, Mich.: Mrs. Audrey Oskins, of Detroit, Mich., and Mrs. Lola L. Milash, of Chicago, Ill. Four grandchildren also survive.
Mr. Britton served in the U.S. Navy for almost 20 years, in the rate of machinist's mate. Following that and during the years of World War II he was employed in Detroit, Mich., where he was an inspector in the plant of Vickers Hydraulic.
Returning to Jefferson county, Mr. and Mrs. Britton resided at various times near Westville, near Allens Mills, and also in Brookville and Summerville.
Of late the deceased has been employed by the Hanley Company in Summerville, making his residence in Mayport R.D.
He was a member of Grace Baptist church of New Bethlehem.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 13 at 2:30 p.m., in Grace Baptist church in New Bethlehem. Rev. R.L. Snyder officiated."
