Football and basketball player, gymnast, and track athlete.
First Athletic Director of the University of Texas at Austin (1913-1937).
Instrumental in the formation of the (now defunct) Southwest Conference.
University of Texas head basketball coach 1913-1915 and 1920-1922. His team won the first ever Southwest Conference championship for the 1914-1915 season.
Led the fundraising drive to build Memorial Stadium as a tribute to Texans who served in World War I. Texas Memorial Stadium (known today as Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium) opened in 1924. In 1972, new athletic offices and facilities were added as a new building, Bellmont Hall, supporting the west stands of the stadium.
