Carleton B. Chapman was born on June 11, 1915 in Sycamore, Alabama. He graduated from Davidson College in 1932. After receiving a Rhodes Scholarship, he studied human biology at St. Johns College, Oxford, receiving his BA and MA in Physiology in 1939. After returning to the US, he received his MD from Harvard in 1941, and his MPH in 1944. From 1944-1946 he was in the Public Health Service while stationed in the Middle East, China and Indonesia. In 1953, he was named Chief of Cardiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas where he created the first Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Parkland Memorial Hospital, and founded the Pauline and Adolph Weinberger Laboratory for Cardiopulmonary Research. In 1966, he became Dean of Dartmouth Medical School, a post which he left in 1973 to assume the presidency of the Commonwealth Fund. He retired in 1980 at the age of 65 but continued to follow his interest in medical history and ethics. From 1980-1985 he was chairman of the Department of Medical History at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He died on December 10, 2000 in Hanover, New Hampshire.
