James Stewart Dunbar Jr was born on January 28, 1882 in Davidson County, Tennessee, the son of James Stewart Dunbar Sr (1853–1935) and Mary Elizabeth "Bettie" (Gibbs) Dunbar (1855–1928).
He was married to Ethel Strong.
Vice President of Foster Creighton Company and living at 3611 Richland Avenue in Nashville, James Jr was 74 years old and married when he died of arteriosclerosis at Saint Thomas Hospital on June 10, 1956. Burial was two days later in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville.
