Born to the pioneering family of Moses and Hannah Garner in San Bernardino, John was their youngest surviving son. He attended the Academy of San Bernardino. Upon his graduation he worked for 3 years at the San Bernardino Index newspaper. He later ran off to Seattle to seek his fortune and worked hard on a tugboat in the Puget Sound shoveling coal into the boiler. Upon his return to his family after his Northwest escapades he apprenticed under his older brother, Robert Garner and learned the cattle industry. After seven years of learning the meat business and his father's death his mother gave him enough money stored in her kitchen cookie jar to start up his own operations which he founded in 1901 as the Pioneer Meat Market in downtown Riverside on Main Street. Having a good head with numbers his business flourished and he became a very successful business. He had an ownership interest in the first automobile agency in Riverside, a Nash and Columbia dealership at the corner of Lime and University. In 1905 he married Amelia Holstrum who had recently moved to Riverside from Galesburg, Ill who worked as the first telephone operator for Riverside.
Together they had two sons John K Garner 1907 and Charles H Garner 1910. By all accounts he was well liked in the community and was a member in both the Native Sons of the West and the Elks. He was married for 31 years and loved his family very much and in turn he is still remembered fondly.
