Fr. Theodore A. Blackowski, OFM, was born on May 14, 1919, in Paterson, N.J. From 1937 to 1939, he studied at St. Joseph Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y. Fr. Theodore received his bachelor and master’s of arts from St. Bonaventure University, Allegany, N.Y. He was received into the Order Aug. 12, 1939, and professed simple vows Aug. 13, 1940, both at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson. He professed solemn vows Sept. 17, 1943, in Washington, D.C.
Fr. Theodore did his philosophical studies at St. Stephen’s Friary in Croghan, N.Y., and St. Anthony’s Friary in Butler, N.J., and his theological studies at Holy Name College in Washington, D.C. He was ordained a priest June 17, 1945, in the Church of Mount St. Sepulchre, Washington, D.C.
An interesting fact is that Fr. Ted changed the spelling of his family name about the time of his ordination. It is Blachowski (with an “h”) in the earlier records. His religious name was Stanislaus Kotska. Fr. Ted went back to his baptismal name in the late 1960’s, when that permission was granted.
Fr. Ted basically had four assignments: Siena College, Japan, St. Francis of Assisi in New York and St. Anthony’s in St. Petersburg, Fla., until going to the infirmary. From 1946 to 1952, he taught sociology at Siena College, Loudonville, N.Y., except for one year of studies at the School of Far Eastern Languages, University of California at Berkeley.
He was assigned to missionary work in Japan in 1952, while continuing his studies of Japanese at Tokyo’s International Language School. He served as pastor of the Isesaki mission in 1954 until 1961, when he became the assistant pastor at Maebashi and Takasaki parishes. In 1964, he was assigned to the chaplaincy at the International Catholic Hospital in Tokyo, where he showed great compassion for the sick and dying.
Fr. Ted returned to the United States in 1976 and was assigned as parochial vicar to St. Francis of Assisi Church on West 31st Street, until 1981. He then retired to St. Anthony Friary in St. Petersburg while he continued to assist at local parishes and nursing homes. He moved to Holy Name Friary, Ringwood, N.J., in 2004 due to failing health.
He died June 8, 2006, at Holy Name Friary. Fr. Theodore was 87 years old, a professed friar for 65 years and a priest for 60 years.
