Evelyn Couture Brown, 99, passed away at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey on Thursday, Sept. 18 after a brief illness. She was born in her grandparent's home in Benton Township. She spent her early childhood in Alverno, where her father and mother, Nazaire and Marie Couture (Viau), had a general store and creamery. Following a devastating fire at the store, the family moved to Cheboygan, where they had a store on Duncan Avenue. Evelyn went to St Mary's elementary school and graduated from Cheboygan High School. She was married to Jim Brown and had four children with him: James, Barbara, Richard and Margaret. In addition to raising her four children, Evelyn also raised her twin granddaughters, Kim and Leslie Gilbertson. Evelyn worked at several local businesses. She then went to Cosmetology School and bought her own business, the Twist and Twirl Beauty Salon. Evelyn loved white German Shephards and bred them. She also ran a dog kennel. Evelyn was a member of the Jack Pine Saddle Club and had many great social times with all her good friends in the club. She also raised and rode Arabian horses for several years. Evelyn always loved gardening and had a beautiful yard to show for it.
Evelyn is survived by two of her children, Barbara Fought of Frankfort and Richard and Sandra (Ross) Brown of Cheboygan; 20 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Marietta Couture Yankoviak, Aline Couture Michelin, Colombe Couture Sasser, Charles Couture and Armand Couture; two of her children, Jim Brown and Margaret (Peggy) Gilbertson; and one grandchild, Charles Brown.
A memorial mass will be held at St Mary-St Charles Church on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. Published in the Cheboygan Daily Tribune, September 23, 2014.
