Last Charter Member Of Delanson Lodge Dies

Beth Omen Lodge, No. 521, I.O.O.F. of Delanson, conducted funeral services Sunday morning at 11 o'clock from White's Funeral home, there for its last charter member, James Clark Sheldon, 80, who died in Weehawken, N.J., Thursday, following a brief illness. Beth Omen Lodge was instituted in the village of Quaker Street in 1884, and Mr. Sheldon was numbered among the members who worked for its organization. He was the last of the lodge's charter members.

Mr. Sheldon was born in Delanson son of the late H.W. and Lucy Barton Sheldon. When he was 20 years of age he founded the "Centennial Star", a Delanson weekly newspaper which flourished for two years, during 1876-77. Mr. Sheldon was for a time editor of his own paper. This weekly started with a circulation of less than 400, but before its publication had ceased increased more than 100 more. Mr. Sheldon carried items of interest from communities throughout the area, as well as notes from the cities of Schenectady and Albany.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Carrie Fenn Sheldon; one son, Orville Sheldon of Delanson; two brothers, Embra Sheldon of Delanson and Jacob Sheldon of Fort Hunter; and several grandchildren.
