He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Carolyn (Sauer) Brackmann. They were married on Sept. 4, 1954 in Lakewood, OH.
They were blessed with three children: Sandra (Matthew) Street (grandsons Nathaniel, Eric, David, Luke); Dr. James (Beth) Brackmann (grandchildren Phillip, Claire, Allison); Douglas (Dawn) Brackmann (grandchildren Jacob, Megan, Blake). He was blessed with eight cherished great-grandchildren: Lachlan and Evelyn; Stella, Connor & Carter, Brooke & Ellery, Emilia.
He is survived by his sister Marilyn Chappell. He was preceded in death by his siblings Marcella Bostelman; Ronald Brackmann; and Edward Brackmann. Milt cared for many patients in the Ft. Wayne area as a selfemployed optometrist. He was an active participant at Zion Lutheran, Epiphany Lutheran and St. Peter’s Lutheran churches in Fort Wayne, and Emmanuel Lutheran in Naples, FL. He was an alumnus of Concordia Lutheran High School and remained a life long supporter following his graduation in 1948. He attended Valparaiso University where he met Carolyn in 1949 and then graduated from Indiana University’s School of Optometry. He was a charter member of the Concordia Lutheran Education Foundation and in 2005 was honored as a lifetime director. In 2013 he was inducted into the Concordia Athletic Hall of Fame. Milt played for the Concordia Lutheran, Valparaiso University and Marine Corps basketball teams. During the Korean War, he served in the second Marine Division. Charitable interests included Bethania (India) and Project Mercy (Ethiopia). He made several trips to Honduras with VOSH - an eye care project involving the Lion’s Club. Family summer weekends were spent at Pretty Lake and winter retirement months in Naples, FL.
There will be a funeral service at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 21, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. Unfortunately, due to the current area health restrictions, there will be no visitation.
