The death of Frank H. Hathorn, one of the leading citizens of this village, occurred this morning at 11 o'clock at his home on North Broadway. Mr. Hathorn was owner of the Grand Union Hotel and for the past three years had been manager of the mineral springs owned by the State. Mr. Hathorn had been ill for a year. Two weeks ago he went to New York to complete a lease of the Grand Union Hotel and when he returned he was stricken with the fatal illness. He had been unconscious since Sunday.

Frank H. Hathorn was born in this village June 9, 1847, and was the son of Henry Harrison Hathorn. His father build Congress Hall Hotel in 1848 and afterwards was a member of Congress and sheriff of Saratoga County. He was one of the substantial citizens of the village a half century ago. Frank H. Hathorn was educated in the schools of Saratoga Springs and graduated from Yale in 1875 [1867]. He was a man of ability and became successful in life. He returned to this village and was associated with his father in the conduct of Congress Hall. When the Hathorn mineral spring was discovered he took the management of that property and developed it until it was the leading spring of Saratoga, patronized by thousands of visitors when Saratoga was at its height as a summer resort. Mr. Hathorn was made manager of the springs for the State. Mr. Hathorn was the first to take up the fight against the companies which pumped the gas well to the detriment of the mineral springs and pushed it to a conclusion which ultimately resulted in the pumping being stopped.

Mr. Hathorn was a public spirited citizen and had the interest of Saratoga at heart. This was shown a year ago when the Grand Union Hotel was about to be sold and torn down. At the last minute Mr. Hathorn came forward and purchased the property and saved it to the village. Mr. Hathorn was in New York to lease the hotel for opening this season, when he was stricken with his last illness. Mr. Hathorn was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Royal Arcanum and the University Club of New York.

He married Miss Kate M. Fonda of Louisville, Ky., who died several years ago. He is survived by his daughter, Miss Florence Fonda Hathorn; his mother, Mrs. Emily H. Hathorn; one brother, William A. Hathorn.
