A Son of William and Rebecca Flower Young. Benjamin had five siblings. He studied medicine in Philadelphia under Dr. Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, who wrote him a letter of recommendation that he took with him to Northumberland, Pa. in the summer of 1788.
Rebecca Flower Young, Benjamin’s mother, was a skilled flag maker. She passed the trade down to her daughter, Mary Young Pickersgill, Benjamin’s sister. She stitched together the flag that flew above Fort McHenry that inspired the Star Spangled Banner.
Originally interred in “Quaker Green Cemetery” in Northumberland, reinterred in Riverview Cemetery. Married Sarah Harriet Bull Haines in 1798. Children: (1) Josiah Haines Young d. April 24, 1802, whooping cough and measles. (2) John Boyd Young, died young. (3) Caroline Josephine Bull Young.
