That the few little below zero spurts we have had this winter are but shadows compared with the good old fashioned winters of a half century ago, is revealed ina clipping handed us by Mrs Margaret Pond which was written by her father Levi Ross of Addison. It is dated April 11, 1856 and reads:
Mr Saxton: I herewith send you some of my observations of the weather during the remarkable winter just past, for the benefit of your readers if you think proper to publish. In the first place, it froze more or less for 101 consecutive days. It never rained for 103 consecutive days, with one exception, when a few drops could just be heard on the roof of the house. The ground was covered with snow 98 days for the 26th Dec, 1855 until the 12th March, 1856. The mercury sunk to zero and below 35 morning -the 10th Jan 32 degrees below - the which I have kept for 26 years. On coldest morning on my record, the 10th March the mercury sunk to 23 degrees below zero the coldest on my record in March. The past winter has been the coldest since the winter of 1780-81, which is 75 years. Levi Ross
