Civil War veteran - joined Co. F 117th New York Infantry at Steuben, New York 13 August 1862.
Stated he was born in Lewis county, N.Y, was 32 years of age, and a farmer by occupation.
Caleb was promoted immediately to the rank of Corporal, and returned to the ranks 1 October 1862.
He is listed as having deserted 20 December 1862 at Camp Morris, D.C, Defences of Washington.
Caleb is one of those elusive people who seem to disappear from all census lists, little could be found to track his post war life.
Lately, a list of Lewis county Civil War veterans compiled by the Walter H French Camp #17 Sons of the Union Veterans was located which shows Caleb P Bailey, born 1828, serving in the 117th NY Infantry, and dying January 1893 at the Lewis County N.Y Home (poorhouse).
The Lewis County Poorhouse was opened in 1846 and was open to those men and women sick and destitute, unable to look after themselves.
The Home housed about 50 male and female residents who worked on the attached farm to pay for their meals and lodgings.
There is a record of a C P Bailey being admitted 29 April 1889, aged 65, born in Lewis County with "sickness".
It appears he was a farmer from nearby Denmark, unable to look after himself.
The deceased were buried in the attached Lewis County Home Cemetery, most in unmarked graves.
