A son of August and Anna (Wascher) Singbusch, both of whom were immigrants from Germany. After graduation from Champaign High School, he spent 2 1/2 years as an engineering student at the University of Illinois. His first business venture was with Root and Vanderfoot, manufacturers of gasoline engines, at Moline, Illinois. After two years, he returned to Champaign and took a short course in the steam engineering department of the University. He then worked for Curtis and Singbusch, a business, in which his father was a partner, manufactured automobile parts and foundry castings. He returned to the University and worked three years in the electrical engineering department. He then moved to Enid, Oklahoma, where he worked in the city's electrical department. On april 27, 1910 he married Hazel Scott at Enid, Oklahoma. Their children were: Carl, Dorothy, and Elsa. After his return to Champaign, he worked four years for Caldwell and Company, electrical contractors. In 1915, he was appointed electrician for the city of Champaign. An active Free Mason, he was a member of Western Star Lodge No. 240 A.F. and A.M.
