Irene Neu
Irene Dorothy Neu, 85, died at 4:10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007, at New London Nursing & Rehab Center.


Born Sept. 10, 1921, in Viele, she was the daughter of Merrill and Dorothy Sharp Buck. On June 6, 1948, she married Otto F. Neu in Denmark. He died Aug. 17, 2000.

Mrs. Neu taught school at Sunny Slope and then taught in Wever for a number of years. She was a substitute teacher for 16 years in Denmark and Fort Madison schools. She attended college in Cedar Falls and at Iowa Wesleyan College and received a teaching degree.

She was a member of Denmark United Congregational Church of Christ and Plymouth Circle. She enjoyed family vacation times, sports and reading. She wrote poetry and in 2004, she wrote a book, "All About Me."

Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Mahoney of Denmark and Bonnie Gaskill of Oshkosh, Wis.; two sons, Richard Neu of Council Bluffs and Leslie Neu of Iowa City; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. today at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory in Fort Madison, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Neu will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory with the Revs. Barbara Koenig-Byorum and David Gaskill officiating. Burial will be in the Denmark Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Twin Oaks Manor and New London Nursing & Rehab Center.
