Retirements, Promotions in Staff at Anaconda Smelter Are Announced

C. M. Holstrom, who has been superintendent of leaching at the Zinc Plant, succeeds Mr. Emanuel i as superintendent of Zinc Plants, E. S. Kramlich, former assistant superintendent of the Ferro manganese Plant has been elevated to superintendent of that plant

C. M. Holstrom is Anaconda born and reared. He attended Anaconda High School and graduated from the University of Montana as a major in chemistry and mathematics with a BA degree. During his college vacation periods he was employed by the Anaconda company as a laborer in the Reverberatory Department. Starting as a chemist, he was appointed smelting engineer and then assistant superintendent of the Phosphate Plant. He moved to the Zinc Plant in 1947 as superintendent of leaching which position he held until his elevation to superintendent of Zinc Plants.

Mr. Holstrom resides at 510 Main St. He is a member of Pi Beta Phi, chemistry honorary society.

Charles Holstrom serves 36 years

Charles M. Holstrom, a longtime member of the Anaconda Co. management team in Montana, will retire, Nov. 1 after more than 25 years with the company.

A native of Anaconda, Holstrom received his degree in chemistry from the University of Montana in 1934. He started work for the company in 1936 as a chemist in Anaconda. He later was assigned to the research department and subsequently was promoted to the positions of smelter engineer, superintendent of the dust treating plant, superintendent of roasting, assistant superintendent of the phosphate plant, superintendent of zinc plant, smelter project and development engineer, and assistant superintendent of the Anaconda Reduction Works.

Holstrom was appointed superintendent of the Weed Concentrator in Butte in 1965 and in 1967 advanced to manager of metallurgy for the company's Montana operations. -

He and his wife, the former Kay Albee, live at 3545 Whiteway. They have a son, Jack, of Helena, and a daughter, Mrs. Bruce (Susan) Quande, in Rock Springs, Wyo.

HELENA - Charles Martin Holstrom was born in Anaconda on Sept. 6, 1912 and died at Big Sky Care Center in Helena on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999.

His parents were Albert and Belle Holstrom, from Stockholm, Sweden, and St. Charles, Canada, respectively. He was the youngest of two children. His sister Martha Nordquist passed away in 1989.

Charles grew up in Anaconda, and graduated from the University of Montana in calculus and chemistry. While he was a "Grizzly," he worked as a chemistry assistant, and was president of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

After college, he worked for a time as a chemist for the Department of Highways in Helena. He then returned to Anaconda and began working for the Anaconda Co. (Arco), where he became smelter superintendent. Later, he was promoted to the position of manager of metallurgy and was responsible for smelter operations in Anaconda, the Weed concentrator, Great Falls and Columbia Falls operations. He retired in 1971. He received an honorary metallurgy degree from the School of Mines in Butte.

He married Kathryn Albee of the Albee ranch family in Deer Lodge in 1942. They had two children, Susan and Jack. Kathryn passed away in 1981.

After retiring from work with the Anaconda Co., Charles lived in Sun City West, Ariz., in the winters. He built the family home at Georgetown Lake, and resided there in the summers where many a pleasant evening was spent on the deck watching the sunset during "happy hour."

Charles was an avid traveler, and he visited relatives in the Nordic countries. He also traveled to Europe, Russia, the Mediterranean and South America. He was a woodworker, often drafting his own furniture. He was a natural tinkerer and could repair almost anything. He was a bird hunter, fly fisherman, and crossword puzzle enthusiast.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Bruce Quande, and their daughter, Kirsten Quande, of Missoula; his son, Jack Holstrom of Helena; nephews, Bob Nordquist of Lincoln, Neb., and Bill Nordquist of Elko, Nev.; and a niece, Ann Hoy of Kansas City, Mo. He also is survived by his very special friend and traveling companion, Alyce Tinthoff of Sun City West, Arizona.

A gathering to celebrate his life will be held at a later date at Georgetown Lake.
