MATTOON -- Cecil Francis Abbott, 81-years-old, won his eternal reward on Thursday, September 29, 2016, at 2:52 p.m. entering heaven from his home in Mattoon, Ill., during his fight with cancer his strong will to live, unwavering faith in God, and the love and prayers of family, friends, his church and many supporters carried him through his pain and treatment. Yet even throughout his own struggle with cancer, he lived a life that is a beautiful example of how to love people. He brought joy to many others sitting nearby receiving their treatments simultaneously at Sarah Bush, and the many doctors, nurses and caretakers he came across.

Cecil was born on May 7th, 1935 in Sullivan, Ill., to Ethel and Esther (Clayton) Abbott. He was preceded in death by them, and his 7 siblings, Wilma Fox, Betty Roark, Edward, Jim, Oliver, Johnny and Marvin Abbott.

Known for his ease in frequent conversation throughout his life he maintained a sweet and simple demeanor that won the hearts of many, who even now are being changed by his witness of what Jesus Christ did for him. His signature gift of joy, shows through his constant smiling, laughter, and joking around, will never be forgotten.

He left to serve the country he was so proud of at just 16, and along the way met his lifelong love, Diane Hampton. The couple was married on December 29th, 1959, in Hot Springs, South Dakota. During his 21 years in the United States Airforce, he served in both Korea and Vietnam. Along the way accumulating numerous air medals, and service awards, retiring in 1973 at Scott Air Force Base, as a Staff Sergeant. He worked over the years at the City of Mattoon water department, and U.S.I. Quantum in Tuscola.

Married for 56 years, Cecil and Diane raised their 2 children, Mary and Marletta over the years in, various places around the US and England, finally returning to Mattoon. A man of faith and the heart of the family, Cecil shaped their spirituality by his Christian example. With a thankfulness for life, Cecil loved to sing, play guitar, fish, work in his shop, play silly games with his great grandchildren, chart with friends and family and talk about Jesus... just to name a few.

He is survived by his loving wife, Diane, daughters, Mary (Steve) Pollum of Cooks Mills and Marletta (Dan) Bolin of Mattoon, his grandchildren, Matthew (Rachel) Frederick of Mattoon, Joshua (Jill) Frederick of Mattoon, Jennifer Bolin of Effingham, Kaleb Pollum, of Springfield and Stephanie Pollum of Sacramento, California and the light of his last days Great-Grandchildren, Kaeden, Khloe, Klaira, and Logan Frederick.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 3, 2016, at Mattoon Family Worship Center with Pastor Brad Brown officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday Evening. October 2, 2016 at Mattoon Family Worship Center, Schilling Funeral Home is assisting the family.

It was the simple things around him in life that he never took for granted, commenting daily how fortunate and thankful he was. Above all, Cecil was absolutely devoted to his family. He was a man of strong faith, believing in the power and strength of Jesus Christ's love and the beauty and peace that would await him after his passing.

Memorial donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, which he loved and supported. Beyond financial donations, Cecil lived to treat others the way he would like to be treated. So do a loving act of kindness, make someone laugh, send a card, give a hug, or say "I love you" in his memory, and if you haven't accepted the Lord, Jesus Christ as your personal savior, please look into it... as Cecil would often say "God is so good."
