Captain William L. Reed, retired, died May 30, 1974 at Jacksonville, Florida where he had made his home tor many years. He was born August 10, 1896 in West Tremont, the son of Adam and Emma (Mitchell) Reed, the 13th in a family of 16 children.
At the death of his father, he became temporary lighthouse keeper at Nash Island Lighthouse, though only 14 years old.
He followed the life of the sea serving as mate and then captain of several tankers and cargo ships.
William Reed served in the Naval Reserve during the First World War from 1915 to 1919. During World War Two he was commissioned Lieutenant Commander from 1942-1946. He saw the Jima and often remarked on his pride in the boys who served with him in the Pacific.
Survivors include Virginia his wife, Virginia Maxwell Reed; Jacksonville: one son Gordon Reed, St.Petersburg, Florida.
Three sisters, Mrs. Benjamin Gott (Mildred);
Mrs. Ambrose Gott (Miriam) both from Arlington Heights, Mass. Mrs. Alvin Walls (Bessie) ;Bass Harbor and one brother, Elmer Dalton Reed; Franklin. Services were held in Jacksonville, Florida.
