By 1840 the family has migrated to Missouri, later settling in Washington Township, Jackson County, Missouri. Most of his siblings stayed behind, dying in Floyd County, Virginia.
Edward and Nancy were the parents of James Ira, Eliza Jane (Rule), William Lee, Irene (Rippeto), and Mary Alice (Manion).
The family would have gone through tough times during the Civil War when there was a big battle at Hickman Mills that caused the loss of many, as well as the battle at Lone Jack where his sister lived. There are many deaths of extended family members during that war time period, not always identified whether they were casualties of war or not. It is not known if daughter Eliza Jane Rule and her youngest son Edward Lee died as a result of the war or not.
