Violinist and composer. Born in St. Louis, Mr. Spiering studied at the Cincinnati College of Music and in Berlin. He was once musical director of the Chicago Musical College and was concert master of the New York Philharmonic Society from 1909 to 1911. He was one of the leaders in the movement to revive the presentation of German operas in this country after World War I. His father was a leading musician in St. Louis for many years and did the pioneer work by which the present St. Louis Symphony Orchestra was inaugurated. After moving to New York he became concert master of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He eventually became the conductor and then became a violin specialist. After making a successful tour throughout the Northwest he was approached by the music loving people of Portland to found a symphony orchestra there and become its conductor. He died in Munich following an operation.
