Gladys Mae Buxton Greer, 98, of Oakdale was born May 20, 1921 to the union of Mitchell Buxton and Olive Katie (Johnson) Buxton.

In 1938, she graduated from Elizabeth High School and completed an additional year in secretarial business. On April 26, 1941, she married Robert Hardy Greer for 67 years until his death in 2008. They raised two daughters, Judith and Linda.

Throughout her life, Gladys was known for her sweet-natured kindness and generous hospitality. After years of volunteering her services as a member at First Baptist Church and as a very active band parent for the Oakdale High School Warriors, Gladys shared her love of children as a teacher’s aide in special education at Oakdale Junior High School and Oakdale Elementary School, working there 20 years and earning state-wide recognition as Teacher’s Aide of the Year.

Her favorite pastimes were fishing at her camp with Hardy, hanging out with her sisters and feeding her friends and family.

Although dementia invaded her final 11 years, Glady’s sweet spirit shone through until her peaceful death Friday afternoon, April 3rd, 2020.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda (Greer) Hensel of Tucson, Arizona; grandson, Robert Hogan of Beaverton, Oregon; granddaughter, Dawn Wendle Castillo of Plano, Texas; two great grandchildren, Kiri Hogan of Lake Charles and Daemon Hogan of Kelso, Washington; two sisters, Pearl Perkins of Minden, Louisiana and Nathel Smith of Metairie, Louisiana; along with a host of family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Mitchell and Katie Buxton; her husband, Robert Hardy “Humpy” Greer; her daughter, Judith Greer; two sisters, Dolly Castilona and Clementine Davis; two brothers, Woodrow Buxton and Vester Buxton.

A special thank you is offered to Genora Laird.

Because of the danger of Covid-19, there will be no funeral service only an interment at Cryer Cemetery. However, a memorial service will be held later, to celebrate a Christian Life that was well-lived and well-loved.
