Obituary for Twyla Ewing

Twyla Ewing, age 89 of Corydon, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 7, 2020 at Corydon Specialty Care.

Twyla Myrtle Acheson was born on November 27, 1930 in Allerton, Iowa to Elmer and Myrtle (Fortune) Acheson. Twyla attended school in Allerton and graduated from Allerton High School in 1947. She then went on to pursue her education degree through Northeast Missouri State Teacher’s College and then finished her Bachelor’s Degree at Drake University. Twyla was married to Donald Leroy Ewing on June 2, 1950 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa. The couple had three sons: Rod, Tom and Jim.

Twyla was a dedicated farm wife, pitching in wherever necessary to support the farming operations as well as managing the household. She could work a field like no other. It’s been written, “I need somebody willing to get up before dawn, weed the garden, cook breakfast and dinner, then go to town and work her full-time job, come home to work alongside her farmer, and then make supper.” So, God made a farmer’s wife. Twyla enjoyed being her farmer’s wife. And he loved her so.

Twyla enjoyed many things through the years. Camping at the Iowa State Fair with the family, water skiing summer nights at Lake Marie, traveling, playing ping pong, Scrabble, puzzles and gardening were some of her favorites.

Teaching was her passion. Twyla taught elementary school for many years. She was kind but stern with her students and they loved her. She called things like she saw them… and was usually right. She enjoyed teaching children and adults the lessons of the Bible. A Sunday School teacher for many years, Twyla was a spiritual mentor to many. In her later years, she looked forward to her Thursday bible studies at the Care Center. She enjoyed kids and opened her home to the grandkids and their friends after school. Pop and cookies were always readily available. If you came to visit, she’d give you a cup of coffee whether you wanted one or not. She loved to bake and cook. Rhubarb cobler, homemade ice cream were favorites and we will certainly miss her signature ham balls! She truly enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, she was happiest when her family was all together. Twyla is a longtime member of the Clio Baptist Church. Her faith was great and the peace of Christ ruled her heart.

A very passionate woman, dedicated to her family and to her Lord, she will be greatly missed.

Twyla is survived by son Rod Ewing (Rhonda), son Tom Ewing (Debbie), son Jim Ewing (Amanda), grandchildren: Justin Ewing (Erica), Ryan Ewing, Amy Ewing, Ben Ewing, Olivia Ewing, and Charley Ewing, great grandchildren: Chloe, Sedalia, Tavian and Annellyse Ewing, brother Everett Acheson (Mary Lou), sister Ruby Kint, and numerous extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Donald Ewing and her sister Erma McNeily.

A visitation will be held on Friday, April 10, 2020 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon. A private family burial will be held at the Allerton Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Clio Baptist Church. Condolences may be shared at www.thomasfh.com and at facebook.com/thomasfuneralhome.
