Jasper was the firstborn child to Joseph W and Sarah Underwood Roberts who married 30 June 1839, White County, Tennessee. He is listed as living in White County for the 1840 and 1850 federal censuses, but in 1860 he lives in his uncle William Claude Roberts and family in Morgan County, Alabama - he is listed as a farmer. It is interesting to note that William C and Mahala Copeland Roberts named their son born in 1859 Jasper.

Jasper's great grandfather Reuben Roberts enlisted and fought during the Revolutionary War. Evidently, Jasper felt a need to fight for his beliefs because at age 21 he enlisted at *Camp Harris on 21 May 1861 for service in the Tennessee Volunteer Army and was placed in the 16th Infantry, Co G, as a private. D.R. Smyth accepted his enlistment for a period of 12 months. The 16th Tennessee Regiment was organized 10 June 1861 and re-organized in May, 1862. He was present on the muster roll for Jan & Feb 1862... for Mch & Apr 1862... for May & June 1862... for July & Aug 1862, his presence is not stated. He was present on the muster roll for Aug 31 to Dec 31, 1862 and was last paid by Dashiell on 30 Apr 1862. Jasper Roberts was killed in the 1st Division, Right Wing, Army of the Mississippi, in the engagement near Perryville, Kentucky on Oct 8, 1862. *{The distance between Camp Harris, Estill Springs, Franklin County, TN and Caney Fork, Doyle is 64 miles}

A claim of settlement for his belongings and pay was made by Joseph W. Roberts, his father, on 12 March 1863.
