Burned to Death

Smyrna, Texas

February 4, 1909: To the Sentinel

Th entire community was saddened when the news spread last Monday evening that Mrs. Cora Spinks, one of the vicinity's most estimable women, was fatally burned. She and the children were burning grass in the field, when her apron caught and despite their efforts the fire destroyed all her clothing, burning the entire surface of her body. Medical aid was instantly summoned, but all efforts to relieve her availed nothing and she died after 48 hours of intense suffering.

Decreased was a widow, her husband having died three years previously, and leaves five children, all girls, to brave this world with neither father nor mother. She was laid to rest at old Smyrna. Reverand J.M. Cochran conducting funeral services.
