Elmer Stingley was born near Laurel, in Cedar County, Nebraska, January 7, 1896, the son of Walter and Mary (Gilmore) Stingley. His parents moved in 1909 to a farm they had purchased in Bramhall Township in Hyde County, South Dakota. On February 12, 1916, he was married to Vivian Stoner, the ceremony being performed by the bride's father, George C. Stoner, a prominent pioneer in Hyde County. In 1933 Elmer and Vivian moved with their four children, to Highmore, South Dakota. Elmer worked for a time in the gas and oil business, taking over the management of the Standard Oil bulk station in Hyde County which he managed for 12 years. Then he returned to farming which has always remained the occupation he preferred. Elmer was survived by his wife, aged mother and his four children, Elizabeth Welch of Long Beach, Calif.; Marjorie Hurd, John Stingley and Jeanne Hill, of Highmore, his six grandchildren and his brother, Alvy Earl Stingley of Dixon, Nebraska, besides several nieces and nephews.
