According to her baptismal record, Catherine (the third child of Patrick O'Brien and Catherine Boyle) was born on 7 August 1890. However, the Social Security Index and her funeral record both have her date of birth as 6 August 1890. She was baptized at St. Patrick Cathedral in San Jose, California on 17 August 1890. Her baptismal sponsors were Thomas Donohue and Maria Owens.

Della never married. She lived with her brother, Lawrence "Dude", at the family home. They both helped raise Henrietta, the child of their brother, William. (Henrietta's mother had died 16 days after giving birth.)

On 25 April 1975, Della died from leukemia in Redwood City, California. Her obituary from an unknown newspaper reads: "A Mass of Christian Burial for Adele O'Brien, 84, a life-long resident of San Jose, will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church. Last rites will begin at 9:30 a.m. from Ward Funeral Chapel. Miss O'Brien lived at 368 N. Sixth St. virtually all of her years. Four brothers and a sister preceded her in death. She died Friday in a Redwood City hospital. Surviving are several nieces and nephews, including Frank, James, Marshall and William O'Brien, all of San Jose. Rosary services will be held tonight in the funeral chapel." She was buried on 29 April 1975 at Calvary Cemetery in San Jose.
