Dr, Karl Connell, surgeon and designer of the first all-American gas mask to be used by the American Expeditionary Force in the World War, died of a heart attack at his home, 32 Bretton Road, Saturday morning after two days’ illness. Dr, Connell had moved to Scarsdale for the winter only a short time ago. His permanent home was in Branch, New York. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Greenville Reformed Church. Dr. Connell was bom in Omaha slxty-two years ago, the son of William J. Connell, a Republican attorney. He was graduated from Columbia College in 1898 and from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1900. Service In France At the outbreak of the World War Dr. Connell went to France as chief surgeon of the medical unit sent by Mrs. Harry Payne Whitney. He was a major in the National Guard medical corps, 1907-17; was a United States Government observer in Germany and Austria in 1915 and became a member of the Medical Council of National Defense in 1916. He saw Mexican border service in 1917 and as a major in the Chemical Warfare Service with the A.E.F. from 1917 to 1919, received the Distinguished Service Medal for perfecting the gas mask. Dr. Connell was an associate in surgery in Columbia University from 1910 to 1914 and assistant attending surgeon at Roosevelt Hospital in New York from 1908 to 1918. Upon his return from France after the war he became Professor of Surgery at Creighton University, in Omaha, and in 1920 he founded Presbyterian Hospital in that city, serving as its president until 1924. He retired from the practice of surgery in 1925 and devoted the next six years to the invention of anaesthetic apparatus. Dr. Connell obtained ten patents bearing on the apparatus, which he began producing in Branch in 1930, when he founded the Connell Apparatus Company. The concern was sold last year to the Ohio Chemical Company. Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Frank Hovey - Roof of Lakewood, New Jersey, whom he married in 1922; two daughters, Barbara and Giola Connell; a son, Karl, Jr.; and a sister, Mrs. Edward Creighton of Omaha. m .
