A descendant of the Worb, Switzerland branch of the Von Graffenried family, Marie Jacqueline DeGraffenried, was a daughter of Joseph E. DeGraffenried and Rosetta May Thomas. Lived near Gowen, Oklahoma around 1910 and stayed in the region all her life. Her parents both died suddenly around 1911-12, it is said due to a flu epidemic. Her oldest brother Lafayette became her guardian, along with his wife Pearl Carter Traylor DeGraffenried. However, he was killed in a rodeo accident in 1912. It's unclear what happened to her at this point. Pearl remarried and so did not continue as guardian. Marie said that she was taken in by a "blackfoot" Indian family named Iagan (sp?), but this is by no means certain. At age 15 she married her 26 year old brother in law, Asa "Ace" Carter. She lied about her age and made herself 18. She maintained that pretense all her life.

In her first marriage Marie had two sons, Joseph and Hobart Buddy Earl Carter. The listing below of "Robert Carter" is in error but it has remained uncorrected. Marie's son was Hobart "Buddy" Earl Carter.

Marie's marriages are as follows:
1. Asa J. Carter
1892–1943
Sons:Hobart Earl Carter 1922–1944, Joseph Carter 1923–1923
Married 1919

2. Avery W Rogers (married twice: 1930 and 1942)
1896–1974

3. Buster/ Custer LeFlore married 1944
1908–1962

4. Hugh Rant Lackey married 1948

5. David J. Howe married 1949
1905–

6. Parker married 1954

7. Jake G. Choate married March 9, 1955
1896–1961

Gravestone says last name Parker but was married to Choate at time of death.
