Dr. Royal H. Gibson, Sr., was born and raised in Philadelphia. In 1937 he earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Drexel University. Dr. Gibson worked nine years for Armstrong Cork Company before founding his own company, Gibson Associates, Incorporated, in 1946, which manufactured molded closures for glass and metal containers. Dr. Gibson and his wife Betty have five children: Mr. Royal H. Gibson, Jr., Mrs. Roger Abson, Mrs. John Holobinko, Mrs. Virginia Davis , and Mr. Russell Gibson.
Dr. Gibson made great contributions to education at Cumberland College. In addition to the many scholarships he provided our students, he also helped us to make a dream come true by supplying the funds to construct and equip the Royal H. Gibson, Sr., Distance Learning Center. The Center, located on the ground level of the Charles Smiddy Learning Resource Center, features an A T & T Picturtel interactive video system which allows the college to link up by land networking with any video conference room in the world. The facility opens up new avenues of education for Cumberland College students as it brings the world to us and us to the world.
Dr. Gibson passed away in April a few days before the Royal H. Gibson, Sr., Distance Learning Center was to be dedicated. Although he is not with us in person today, his memory long will remain alive on our Cumberland College campus as well as in the lives of the students he so generously helped.
