Son of immigrants from Germany. Son of Civil War veteran. Started life working in a cigar factory, as well as most of his family, while living in Baltimore City. Married a Bohemian girl named Mary Hruby* who he divorced later. Married widow, Lorraine Schultz, and became step-father to three small children...William, Millard, Dorothy. They moved family to Bradshaw (Kingsville) Maryland where he bought and settled into a farm house with acres of land. From there he filled his life-long dream of becoming a florist. He built two greenhouses and sold locally to churches, stores, etc. From there he rented a stand at the North Avenue Market in Baltimore City. They had three more children...Matilda, Alma, George and Norma.
When I was little, I remember the visits that excited me so much. I would run right from the car to the greenhouses. As always...there was Grandpa watering the continuing rows of flowers. Oh how sweet they smelled. The snapdragons were my favorite! In the fall would be rows of red poinsettias. You knew Christmas was just around the corner!
Me, being the oldest of six children, I have so many more memories of him than my siblings. He was a sweet man and loved by all who knew him. He past away in the house he loved. ( which is now being re-stored by his grandson ). Love you Grandpop!
