Civil War Veteran - Enlisted on May 11, 1861, at Elizabethtown, New York, and mustered into Company K, 38th Regiment, New York Infantry (Union) (aka 2d Scott Life Guard). Enlistment Rank: Private.

Regiment attached to Willcox's Brigade, Heintzelman's Division, McDowell's Army of Northeast Virginia, to August 1861. The Regiment left New York for Washington, D.C., September 20, 1861. Duty in the Defenses of Washington, DC till July 16, 1861.

Battles, Skirmishes, and Engagements: Peninsula Campaign (April to August. 1862); Battle of Williamsburg (May 5, 1862); Battle of Fredericksburg (December 13, 1862).

Transferred on December 21, 1862, into Company F, 38th Regiment, New York Infantry (Union). "Mud March" January 20–24, 1863; Chancellorsville Campaign (April 27-May 6, 1863).

Mustered out of service at East New York, Long Island, June 22, 1863, expiration of term.

Enlisted on February 9, 1864, at Troy, New York, and mustered on March 8, 1864, into Company F, 38th Regiment, New York Infantry (Union). Enlistment Rank: Corporal.

Promoted 2nd Lieutenant, on August 19, 1864, and mustered into Company A, 169th Regiment, New York Infantry. Transferred to Company I, November 29, 1864. Promoted 1st Lieutenant, on March 30, 1865, and transferred to Company G, on July 19, 1865.

Battles, Skirmishes, and Engagements: Battle of Chaffin's Farm; Battle of Fair Oaks & Darbytown Road; First Battle of Fort Fisher; Second Battle of Fort Fisher; Carolinas Campaign (March 1-April 26, 1865); Battle of Wilmington.

Surrender of Johnston and his army. Duty in North Carolina until July.

Mustered out of service July 19, 1865, at Raleigh, North Carolina. Discharged March 19, 1868.

Widow Pension was filed on January 19, 1893 (Application No. 568529).


Married March 19, 1868 to Margaret Stout, and to their union was born Ida Lura Knox.
After Charles death, Margaret married Charles Ray and she had three more children. She is buried at the Soldiers' and Sailors' Cemetery in Grand Island, Nebraska.
