27 May 1848 in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland, the 2nd child of 7 children born to Margaret (Brucks) Brooks and John Frederick (SCHMIDT) Smith was a daughter named Anna Caroline Smith.

08 Apr 1865 at old Ft. Pickering at Memphis Tenn, at the age of 16 years, 10 months, & 12 days Anna Caroline Smith married Benjamin Reason Barnes.

Fort Pickering was built in Memphis Tennessee, by the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. It was taken over by the Union Army to provide control of the Mississippi River south of the city.

1868 --- 1879 in a 11 year span, Anna Caroline Smith Barnes gave birth to 4 children. She was 31 years, 4 months, & 7 days of age with the birth of her 4th child, daughter, Daisy Eugenia Barnes.

Death of Mrs. B. R. Barnes
Mansfield lost one of her best citizens Friday in the death of Mrs. B. R. Barnes.

Mrs. Anna Caroline Barnes was born May 27, 1848; died June 8, 1917, age 69 years, and 12 days.

Rev. G. W. Holmes of Seymour, conducted the funeral from the residence at 2:30 p. m. Sunday; interment in the Mansfield cemetery.-The large attendance and the many beautiful floral offerings were fitting tributes to her noble life. The pall bearers were M. A. Freeman, James Coday, G. S. Burney, W. B. Hitchcock, M. E. Gorman and Ben Morris. The music was furnished by J. D. Reynolds. J. C. Carter, Misses Mabel Coday and Lois Beach.

Mrs. Barnes was married April 8 1865, at old Ft. Pickering at Memphis Tenn., to Benjamin R. Barnes a commissary sergeant of the Union forces, who served during the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. After the close of the, civil war they moved to Western Nebraska. Mrs. Barnes was one of the first white women to live among the Indians in that locality. Most of her life from then on was spent in Nebraska and Kansas, her husband dying in Kilgore, Nebraska,July 5, 1910. Mrs. Barnes and children, then located id Mansfield.

She is survived by three sisters: Mrs. Jessie Towne, Grand Island Neb., Mrs. Wm. Pape, Hepler, Kans., Mrs. S. P. Alberts, Savonburg, Kans; one brother Henry M. Smith, Uniontown Kans.; four children Miss Gussie Barnes, Mansfield; Robert F. Barnes, Kilgore, Neb.; Frank H. Barnes, Mansfield; Mrs. A. V. McCormack, Chicago; eight grandchildren Floyd S. Barnes and Mrs. Albert Childersf Oyen, Canada; Benjamin B. Barnes Lyons Kans.; Misses May, Inez, Zadah, and Chrystal Barnes of Kilgore, Neb., all Children of Robert F. Barnes, and Mrs. G. G. Freeman, Mansfield, daughter of Mrs. A. V. McCormack; three great grandchildren Ethel. Robert and Lloyd Childers, Oyen, Canada, children of Mrs. Albert Childers. Of the above all her sisters and children were here for the funeral, -also her granddaughter, Mrs. Freeman, as well as Messrs, McCormack and Freeman.
