ERVIS WALTER LESTER, 105, of Rush Springs, passed away Monday, August 13, 2007, in Rush Springs.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Southern Baptist Church in Rush Springs, with David Hale officiating. Burial will be in the Rush Springs Cemetery under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel in Rush Springs.
Ervis was born Tuesday, November 12, 1901 in Stamford, Texas, to Benjamin Walter and Edna Zelpha Chafin Lester. He lived in Stamford from 1901 to 1912. Ervis graduated from Rush Springs High School in 1921. He then attended the University of Oklahoma and the University of Southern California, where he received his associate degree. He married Beatrice Ethel Cobble in Oklahoma City in 1922.
He moved to Los Angeles, Calif., in 1923, where he retired as Deputy Chief of Police on the LA Police Department after 20 years of service.
Ervis was the founder of the University of Southern California Delinquency Control Institute. Ervis was also a marriage counselor for ten years at the Hollywood Christian Church. He served 16 years as the Adult Authority Vice Chairman and Chairman. In 1971 he served as President of the LA Breakfast Club. He received the Outstanding Civic Service Award in 1972. Ervis returned to Rush Springs that year.
On Aug. 2, 2004, he had the pleasure of meeting Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to receive the Deputy Chief of Police Award. He enjoyed fishing, reading, working outside and spending time on the farm. In 2005, he received the State of California Lifetime Service Award.
He also enjoyed going to Lion's Club every Tuesday. Not only did Ervis attended faithfully, he also served on several committees with the Lion's Club. This year Ervis received national recognition for being the oldest member in Oklahoma Lion's Club. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #7, Al Malalaka Shrine in Los Angeles, and the First United Methodist Church in Rush Springs.
His survivors include two sons, Robert Lester and wife Joanne of Pasadena, Calif., Charles Lester and wife Virginia of Arcadia, Calif.; three grandchildren, Andrea Moss of Sierra Madre, Calif., Cynthia Thompson of San Gabriel, Calif., Denise Lester; four great-grandchildren, Andrew Moss, Jeremy Moss, Elizabeth Moss and Jonathan Moss, all of Sierra Madre; several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a brother and a sister.
Pallbearers will be Conn Goodwin, Joe Dorman, Raymond Rust, Don Mileur, Robert Newman and Jimmy Williams. Honorary bearers will be Lion's Club Members, and Dale Jones.
