Winthrop Atwell (Atwill in many records) was born in Massachusetts about 1806 (various census records show ages that differ). He was a noted newspaper editor in the northeast from the late 1820's to the 1850's, starting and running various newpapers. He married Emily J. Pardee (1814-1855) (daughter of Luther and Sarah Jencks Pardee) in Oswego, N.Y., June 12, 1851 while he was the editor of the Oswego Journal. Emily passed away in 1855. He married for the second time to Cornelia Ann (Talman) Barculo (widow of Hon. Seward Barculo) on Oct. 1, 1862 at St. Paul's Church, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.. He was buried in the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery on August 24, 1871 per the New York, Episcopal Diocese of New York Church Records - St. Paul - Poughkeepsie. Ancestry.com records show that he died August 22, 1871 in New York City.
