Laura Mae Gear Weirich Welte, a resident of Grove, Oklahoma, since 1977, passed away on April 22, 2020, at her home surrounded by her daughter, Carolyn Treadway and her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Lavon Weirich. She was 99 years old and had been in failing health.

Laura was born on August 20, 1920, to Benjamin Harrison and Inez (Shiell) Gear in Coats, Kansas. She was the middle child of five children. She moved to Galesburg, Kansas, in 1928, graduating from Galesburg High School in 1938. She married Glen Bertram Weirich on July 30, 1938, in Yates Center, Kansas. He preceded her in death on April 15, 1983. They were the parents of three children, Martina "Joan," Carolyn Kay, and Larry Phillip.

Laura and Glen farmed in the Whittier community of Parsons, Kansas, until Glen retired in 1977. Laura worked for the US Census Bureau in Pittsburg, Kansas, until she retired in 1982. After Glen passed away, she spent her winters in south Texas. She joined the Loners on Wheels and spent her time on South Padre Island, enjoying the beach, going to Mexico, dancing, and relaxing with her many friends. Summers were enjoyed spending time at her home on Grand Lake with family and friends.

On May 15, 2002, Laura married Donald Leeroy Welte. He preceded her in death on June 28, 2017. They continued to spend winters in south Texas and summers touring the United States.

Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn Treadway of Grove, Oklahoma; son Larry Weirich and his wife Lavon of Grove, Oklahoma; sister Frances Hill of Independence, Missouri; sister-in-law Elenor Gear of Boulder City, Nevada; brother-in-law Duane Weirich and his wife Mary Ellen of Omaha, Nebraska; eight grandchildren, Cheryl Caple of Lenexa, Kansas; Ronald Caple of Parsons, Kansas; Matt Caple and his wife Janet of Calhoun, Missouri; Janet Edmondson and her husband Bob of Grove, Oklahoma; Tracy Turner and her husband Mark of Grove, Oklahoma; Kim Sands and her husband Kevin of Erie, Kansas; Bryan Weirich of Kansas City, Missouri; and Tyler Treadway of Maricopa, Arizona; three step-grandchildren, Rod Long of Homer, Louisiana; Jenni Edison and husband Ed of Wichita, Kansas; and Ashley Namesnik and husband James of Neosho, Missouri; 16 great-grandchildren, 15 step-great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren, 11 step-great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Laura was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; daughter, M. Joan Long; sons-in-law, H. Dean Long and Joseph Treadway; sister and brother-in-law, Vi and Gene Stringer; brother and sister-in-law, Don and Winona Gear; brother, Roy Dale Gear; brother-in-law, Shelby Hill.

Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Mount Hope Cemetery in Galesburg, Kansas.

Memorials may be sent to the Oklahoma Library for the Blind. Laura spent many hours each day listening to the books they provided.
