“I met Kevin Lockwood in 1973. We didn't leave each other's side for two weeks after the night we met. There was no courtship. We just partnered right then and there. Life happens that way sometimes.

Kevin was my partner for 14 years and he died of AIDS on October 12, 1992.

Kevin was a brilliant artist and his last career was in Hollywood making costumes for major films and television shows. He was also one of the most loving, smart and kind people you could ever have met. I still cry sometimes even this many years later.

When Kevin died, in spite of me not having a craft-skilled bone in my body at the time, I endeavored to make him a panel for the Names Project AIDS Quilt. Lovely people helped me make the panel. You'll notice two Santa Claus images. Unlike me, Kevin loved Christmas and collected Santa Claus figures.

In 2015, local school children were doing a project of writing the names and memories of people who had died of AIDS on the sidewalk on Castro Street. A beautiful young girl wrote Kevin's name for me. I sobbed on the street and she held me. She was only 10 years old. Lots of people were crying on Castro Street that day.

When Kevin was diagnosed, he went downhill quickly. It was the time before the remarkable medications we have today. For some reason, I was extremely lucky and have survived with HIV for well over 30 years and I am entirely healthy. How I wish Kevin would have been so lucky. You would have liked him. Everyone liked Kevin.”
