"Richard F. “Richie” Abreu, passed away after a lingering illness, Saturday, March 9th at the Care Dimension Hospice Home in Lincoln, with his family by his side, 24 years after surviving a heart transplant. The beloved husband of Ruth Ann (Netishan) Abreu, he was seventy-two years of age.
Born and raised in Woburn, Richie was one of five children, born to the late Anthony and Mary (Geoghan) Abreu. Richie was a graduate of Woburn High School, Class of 1964. Throughout high school, he was active in many activities, and always eager to help and participate in whatever was needed. Richie established many friendships while in high school, which were all enhanced over the years.
Richie knew a lot of people, and always took time to reconnect and find out how they were doing. If he was in the car, he would always give a big wave. He looked forward to the many Class Reunions that have been held over the years, anxiously awaiting the next, and he never missed one!
Following high school, Richie enlisted in the United States Army where he served proudly for over two years in Vietnam. Upon his return home Richie stopped into a local insurance company where he met Ruth Ann. Yes, it was love at first sight, they began dating and one year later they married!
They settled in to the Central Square section of the city, where they focused on raising their two sons. Vacations at the Cape, a favorite spot being Yarmouth, New Hampshire, the beaches of Rockport, a family trip to Disney World, where many wonderful memories were made, and joyful time had by all.
In the spring, summer and fall Richie also enjoyed taking his newspaper to the Pond, walking, sitting, relaxing and getting caught up on what was going on in the world.
Boston sports were always celebrated in the Abreu household. The Bruins, Celtics, Red Sox and Patriots, they all enjoyed taking their favorite seats in the family room, cheering on all the Boston teams. Richie and his son travelled to Fenway Park annually, passing the love of baseball onto his grandchildren.
Being a “Grandpa” was truly his wonder years. Richie so enjoyed spending time with them. Their interests and hobbies were his too! From the ice hockey rinks, to school performances, to his favorite, the movie theater, Grandpa embraced it all. His favorite movie was “It’s a Wonderful Life” and he loved watching it and sharing the joy of it with his family.
Faith, family, and friends were Richie’s most valuable gifts throughout his life, and the words he lived by. Richie lived each day to the fullest, giving all that he had, in a very kind, gentle and thoughtful way."
