The son of David Collin III and Anna Smith Collin. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY in 1843 and was married in Burlington, NY to Clara Park two years later. David and Clara soon moved to the family farm in Fayetteville, NY. He would later inherit the farm, and operate it, until his death from pneumonia in 1908.
