William Goodland ... went to Taunton soon after his father's second marriage and for a time was in the employ of the Conservators of the River Tone, being appointed "An Inspector and servant of the said river" Oct 9th 1826, and "Toll Collector" Feb 15th 1830. Going into business for himself in 1828 he became a coal merchant in Taunton, and later, in connection with his brother Charles opened a branch in Tiverton, Devon. He was a member of the old Taunton Board of Health, at that time the governing body of the town, the municipal charter having lapsed. In 1854 he filled the ancient office of Constable of the Borough, a relic of medieval days.
