Millbury -

Betty Ann (Sieurin) Church, a resident of the Overlook Community of Charlton, MA, since 2006 and a former longtime resident of Millbury, MA, died on September 15, 2015, in Overlook's skilled nursing facility, after many years of health issues. Betty was born in Worcester, MA, on October 29, 1928, and was the oldest child of Alf and Ethel (Mills) Sieurin. Betty was predeceased by her husband, Richard E. Church, MD, in 2002, by her son, Peter Church, in 2006, and by her sister, Nancy Weston, and her brother, Robert Seurin. She is survived by her sister, Barbara Russell of Mansfield, MA, and by cousins, including Donald Sieurin of South Yarmouth, MA.

Betty leaves her daughter, Ellen Carlson and her husband, Edward Carlson, of South Dartmouth, MA, and Ellen's daughter, Rachel Lagerquist (Ellen's other daughter, Courtney, passed away in 1987). She also leaves her son, Arthur Church of Waltham, MA, Arthur's daughters, Melanie and Bonnie Church, her son Stephen Church and his wife Kathy Church, of Auburn, MA, Stephen's sons, Daniel and Michael Church, and her son Peter's widow, Diane Church of Millbury, and their sons, Nathan and Kevin Church. She also leaves five great grandchildren and nieces and nephews, including Ruth Weston of Portland, OR.

Betty graduated from North High School, Worcester, in 1946, and from the Worcester Memorial Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1949. It was at Memorial Hospital that she met her future husband, Richard, and they were married in 1950. Once he set up his medical practice in Millbury, Betty assisted as his home-based secretary and took care of the phone while he was busy with patients in his office in the center of Millbury or while he was making house calls.

From a very early age, Betty was actively involved with the Camp Fire Girls organization in Worcester County, beginning with the Camp Fire Girls group that her mother started at the Adams Square Congregational Church. Betty's accomplishments included achieving the highest awards as a Camp Fire Girl, starting her own group of Camp Fire Girls in Millbury when her daughter was old enough to join, and serving for many years as a member of the Board of the Worcester Council of Camp Fire Girls. During the summers, as a camper and then a counselor, Betty attended Marion's Camp, a Camp Fire Girls Camp in Sutton. Her mother, sisters, and daughter also attended Marion's Camp as campers and/or counselors. After the camp transitioned to a day/stay program in the early 1970's, Betty served as the camp director for several summers.

With her husband, Betty enjoyed many years of mountain climbing and backpacking. Their adventures started with the entire family hiking mountains in New Hampshire and backpacking along the Appalachian Trail in the Smoky Mountains. She was a life member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, the Adirondack Mountain Club, and the Green Mountain Club. Her accomplishments included hiking the Long Trail in Vermont from the Massachusetts state line to the Canadian border, climbing all 4,000-foot mountains in New England and the Adirondacks, leading Appalachian Mountain Club backpacking trips in the White Mountains, leading backpacking trips for Camp Fire Girls on the Long Trail, climbing the Inca Trail in Peru, and hiking the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Betty was a former member of the Millbury Finance Committee, a former cooperator of the Millbury Savings Bank, and a former member of the Unitarian-Universalist Society of Grafton and Upton.
