On October 30, 1929, Officer Howard Garlinger was killed in a traffic collision while riding his departmental motorcycle.
Officer Garlinger was on the evening shift patrolling in East Bakersfield when a motorist made a turn in front of the patrolman as he was approaching an intersection. Garlinger struck the vehicle broadside and was thrown from his motorcycle, sustaining fatal head injuries.
Officer Garlinger was 31 years old. He had previously served four years with the Kern County Traffic Squad prior to the Squad being absorbed into the CHP in 1929.
Officer Garlinger was born in Iowa, coming to California with his parents. He left a wife and two sons.
