Born in North Carolina in what was later Catawba County, Lawson and his family went to North Georgia following the gold rush there. After working as a miner, he and his wife later moved to California, where they spent the rest of their lives.

Lawson was a son of Andrew Killian III and Maryann Sloop Killian; grandson of Andrew Killian Jr. and Unk. Jonas; and great-grandson of German immigrant Andreas Killian, who arrived in Pennsylvania in 1832, then traveled to North Carolina where he settled and raised a large family.
