Son of John Phipps and Priscilla Teague. Migrated from Clay County, KY to Polk County in the 1850s with several of his family.

He served in the 6th Missouri Cavalry (Union).

John married Sarah Elizabeth McDaniel Dec 17, 1865 in Polk County. They resided in Polk County, Missouri a few miles west of Aldrich.

John & Sarah had eight children all born in Polk County, MO: Waldenetta 1866, Thomas Huston Phipps 1869, Isaac Martin 1871, Nancy Emaline 1872, Fannie E. 1875, Carrie Mae 1878, Kittie J. 1880, John Calvin 1884.

John died of pneumonia while serving as executor for the estate of Thomas McDaniel (see McDaniel Cemetery).

John's brother Jacob lived just northwest of Aldrich as did his sister Easter (Esther) who married Merrit Simmons.
