John Cooper, who had been a citizen of Merrick county for 37 years, and until two years ago a farmer in the Pierce Chapel neighborhood, died last Monday morning at about 2:00 o'clock. Alling health was the reason for his retirement from farm life, but not until a few weeks ago did he become bedfast. Heart ailment was the general cause of his ill health. He had attained the age of 78 years, 7 months and 5 days.

He was born June 9, 1856, in Pittsburg, Pa., child of Sam and Nancy McMullen Cooper. When he was 10 years old his people removed to Fairfield, Ia. There the child grew to manhood. He was married November 23, 1887, to Mary Stuart. To this union one son was born.

He and his family took up their residence in Merrick county in 1898. Less than two years later he lost his wife by death. He remarried April 15, 1903, pledging his troth to Mrs. Bertha Shirley of Grand Island. She survived him as do two brothers and a sister, a son by the first marriage, a grandson, and three stepgrandchildren, and a step-son.

Fred Cooper, the son, lives in Chicago; the brothers are Sam and Frank of Oregon state and Fairfield, Ia., respectively; the sister is Mrs. Alice Shreeves of Bloomfield, Ia. The step-son is Jess Shirley of Eugene, Ore. Norman Cooper, Leona, Otho and Asa Shirley are the grandchildren.

As a boy he untied with the Methodist church of Fairfield, Ia. He had not transferred his membership to Nebraska.

Funeral services were conducted from the Solt Funeral home Wednesday, January 16, at 2:00 p. m. The officiating minister was Rev. R. J. Blue of the Presbyterian church.
