Mass grave for the victims of the 1900 Hoboken Docks Fire. The disastrous conflagration which occurred on Saturday, June 30, 1900 killed at least 326 people in and around four piers and three ocean liners of the Norddeutscher Lloyd shipping company. The fire began when cotton bales stored on NDL's southernmost wharf caught fire, and winds carried the flames to nearby barrels of volatile liquids, including turpentine and oil, which exploded in rapid succession. It burned four piers to the waterline, consumed or gutted nearby warehouses, gutted three of NDL's transatlantic liners, and damaged or destroyed more than 20 smaller craft. The mass grave contains the 149 unidentifiable bodies of victims of the fire and includes the names of missing persons as well, for a total of 171 names.
