JEPPE WESTER FAMILY
Originally, the family name was Sorensen. Since
there were so many families by that name it was
changed to Vester, as it was spelled in Denmark.
To Anna and Soren Sorensen were born nine
children, Jeppe being the second child, born in
1872.
When Jeppe was 19, he and his brothers, Nels
and Christian, emigrated to the United States via
steerage. Jeppe worked his way through a business
course at Valparaiso University in Indiana and
then worked in a bank. He married Ida May Ber-
nard in 1909. After a daughter, Dorthea, was born,
he decided the pollution of the big city made it ad-
visable to move to Wisconsin where he bought a
farm in the Town of Atlanta near two of his
brothers-in-law, Alfred and Fred Bernard. It was
at this farm Blair and Clair were born.
In 1919, Jeppe Wester bought a farm in the
Town of Washington, south of Bruce. This was
where daughters Eleanor, Margaret and Jean were
born.
The Westers worked hard cutting trees, clearing
land to enlarge the new farm. All the children at-
tended the East Chippewa School which was near
the farm. The oldest, Dorthea, stayed at the Fred
Arndt home in Ladysmith and graduated from
Ladysmith High School. After Eleanor, Margaret
and Jean graduated from Bruce High School they
went to Chicago to work and were married. Dor-
thea, Mrs. Herald Ruel, lives in Palo Alto, Califor-
nia. Eleanor, Mrs. Kenneth Blue, and Jean, Mrs.
Ernie Kline, live in Winter Haven, Florida.
Margaret, Mrs. William Vidal, lives in Three
Oaks, Michigan.
